Question:     What is a false pregnancy?

ANSWER:

There are occasions when a bitch is mated and she shows many of the symptoms of pregnancy, but is not actual pregnant.  The same thing can also happen with an unmated bitch. All the signs of pregnancy may continue until the time of whelping, and then disappear.

Apart for  the secretion of milk, which will also disappear, the bitch is quite normal.

The  condition is probably caused by excessive hormone, although, if the bitch has been actually mated the more likely cause is that the pups have died during pregnancy and have been absorbed by the maternal tissues.
